checking genuine designer goods

December 20, 2006

When you are shopping for designer goods on-line it’s hard to know if it’s genuine. There are so many horror stories it’s hard to separate them from fact and just scaremongering. Even so, it makes you more vigilant doesn’t it. When you find a site it’s usually the price that gives it away (we’ve all seen the 3 genuine perfumes for a tenner stalls abroad!) But, with resellers become uber-competitive and under cutting each other left right and centre how do we know if the price it too good to be true?

I was looking for a seiko watch for my boyfriend for Christmas 2007 and came across this designer watch site. I thought the prices were good so I emailed the owner with my concerns. He replied straight away and confirmed everything. A quick bit of research confirmed their address and I even checked out the company that maintain their website. Everything told me to trust them so I bought a watch. It arrived in no time in perfect condition and it’s definitely genuine and my boyfriend is going to SOOOOOO love me on Christmas morning!

Anyway, I would recommend Timedon for Seiko Watches any day.

If like me you are hesitant in buying online, here’s a few things to think about or check up on to help set your mind at rest:

  • Look for a telephone number and address – a genuine online retailer should have nothing to hide and display a registered address and certainly a contact telephone number
  • Ring or email them. Explain your concern and ask them questions
  • Look up the website details – domain registration, hosting, etc at dnstuff.co.uk
  • You can see how long the site has been trading at wayback machine – it shows the sites history (cowboy sites are usually very young)
  • Do an internet search. If the site isnt kosher you can almost guarantee someone will have wrote about it
  • Pay by credit card (they are insured)
  • When you make payment look for the little padlock icon at the bottom of the screen or in the address bar you should see ‘https’ (s = secure)
